These birds don't belong to us nor are they wild. They belong to a guy that lives down the hill from us. They started coming into the yard last summer. At the time, we only thought there were one or two of them. We came to find that there are two males and two females. They are gorgeous birds and quite vocal. Their cry sounds like a very loud cat. You can hear them calling each other from their home or anywhere they are!
To our surprise, this spring the four peacocks came to the yard the same time as the group of turkeys were here. With the Tom turkey in full display, obviously trying to attract the attention of his females, we expected a fight. We have read that male turkeys will fight to the death over their females and the female peacocks seemed interested in the male turkey. Amazingly, the two males (Turkey and Peacock) came nose-to-nose, but no confrontation. They seemed to be very accepting of each other. The two groups intermingled and fed together. We later found out that this is not so unusual. Apparently, turkeys and peacocks are from a similar family so their mingling is not a rare thing.
We have never gotten to see the male peacocks fully display their tail feathers. I hope that someday I will be able to get a photo of that. Until then, I hope you enjoy what I have so far.
