![]() The Loveliest Village in the Hills!A picturesque trip into the past is what you will find in Mount Pleasant, Ohio, located in Jefferson County. The historic district, of this village of 500, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the Department of the Interior in 1974. Century old homes in a variety of architectural styles line the streets.The Society of Friends were popularly called Quakers. In 1650 George Fox, the founder, commanded an English magistrate to "tremble and quake at the word of the Lord". The Friends were recognized as one of the earliest groups to denounce the evils of slavery. Mount Pleasant was a center for anti-slavery activities and four "underground railroad stations" still stand on Union Street. Costumed guides conduct a fascinating tour of this remarkable village's historic buildings, stately homes and interesting museums. In recent years a growing number of bus tours have appreciated the charm, beauty, and history of our town, visited our shops, and dined in our quaint restaurants.
